Secretary of State Greg Amore Visits Broad Rock Middle School: A Real-World Lesson in Civics

Civics comes alive when students can connect what they learn in class to the people and responsibilities that keep our communities running. At Broad Rock Middle School, students recently had that opportunity during a visit from Rhode Island Secretary of State Greg Amore.

Why civics matters for students

Civics is more than a textbook unit. It helps students understand how decisions get made, how laws and policies shape daily life, and how every person plays a role in a healthy democracy.

When students learn about their rights and responsibilities early, they are better prepared to participate thoughtfully in their communities as they grow.

Learning about roles in government

During the visit, Secretary of State Greg Amore spoke with students about what the Secretary of State does and why the role matters. Students explored how government systems work and how different roles support voting, records, and civic participation.

Every student has a role to play

A key takeaway from the conversation was that students are not “too young” to matter. Students can begin practicing civic responsibility now by:

  • Asking good questions
  • Listening to different viewpoints respectfully
  • Staying curious about local and national issues
  • Looking for ways to contribute at school and in the community

Thank you for investing in civic learning

We are grateful to Secretary of State Greg Amore for visiting Broad Rock Middle School and helping students see their role in society more clearly.
