SOUTH KINGSTOWN PERFORMANCE FESTIVAL
April 13, 2010 2:30-8:00 p.m.
What is the Performance Festival?
The Performance Festival is an opportunity for music students to play a solo and receive a performance rating. Students play their solo for an adjudicator (no audience). The adjudicator will fill out a rubric, give some positive feedback, and give a grade, or rating. Ratings of “A” and “B” earn a medal.
It will be held at Curtis Corner Middle School. Students will be assigned a specific room and time to perform their solo. It takes about 20 minutes, including time to warm-up.
What will students do to prepare?
Students will receive selected music from their teacher. (If they take private lessons, the private teacher may help select a solo.) Students practice the music at home, and review it in school with the teacher, until they are ready to perform. It is expected that students play the piece many times before the festival.
What will happen the day of the festival?
Parents will bring their child to Curtis Corner Middle School about 15 minutes before their assigned time. Students will go to the warm-up area, and get tuned. At the assigned time, students will go to the designated room and play the piece for the adjudicator. The judges are private teachers, or advanced college music majors, and are experts on their instrument. They may ask the student to play something again, or give them some helpful hints, and that is it. Students will receive the grade sheet from their teacher at their next lesson. Medals are given out a couple of weeks after.
Why should students participate?
Students who participate in the festival will learn that if they work hard and practice, they can be successful at performing on their instrument. They will experience pride in their accomplishment, and receive a medal. They will also benefit from the feedback from an expert on the instrument.
