Course Topic: SOCIAL STUDIES 
The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good
as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world. - NCSS
COURSE OVERVIEW
This course is aligned with
- South Kingstown Social Studies Curriculum
- RI Grade Span Expectations for Civics and Government and Historical Perspectives
- Common Core Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History, Social Studies and Technical Subjects
Units of study include
- World Geography / Culture
- Latin America
- Africa
- East and South Asia
Grading/Assessment - one letter grade per quarter(A, B, C, D, F) based on the following:
* tests * projects * quizzes * homework completion * binder * participation in class activities
- For projects, students and teacher will use rubrics, criteria sheets, and checklists to guide and assess performance as compared to the standards.
- Students may resubmit an improved project within the timeframe set by the teacher.
- Retakes on tests/quizzes will be determined on an individual basis.
- A parent/guardian signature will be required for any score below 70%
- Families are strongly encouraged to use Parent Connect to monitor quarterly grades
Classroom Expectations
Tools: Students should come to class each day with the following:
- A pencil and a pen (blue or black ink only!)
- Completed homework
- Binder and/or other materials assigned
Behavior:
- Students will follow all school rules - PBIS
- Students will encourage their peers in the learning process
- Students will put forth their best effort at all times
Work Presentation:
- Work will be neat and complete with a heading (first and last name, section, and date)
Learning Strategies:
- Students will record daily homework and projects in their planners
Students will record long-term projects in their planners
- Students will review notes taken in class each day
- Students will keep all materials organized and in good condition
