- Student Reference Books may be left at home to assist with homework.
- Student Math Journal should be brought to class each day.
Other materials: Handouts from numerous sources including the Internet.
Class Objectives:
- Make mathematics fun, meaningful, and relevant.
- Provide a strong foundation in the National Council of Teaching of Mathematics and Performance Based Standards for the sixth grade.
- To have students do not just memorize facts and procedures; but for them to gain an understanding of mathematics and mathematical thinking.
- To integrate content and process in order for students to be able to function effectively in the world.
- To enable students to be able to communicate mathematically and have mathematical conversations on a regular basis.
- To strengthen student organizational skills.
- For students to be able to make connections to the real world and to what is important to them. This shows students the importance and relevance of math. When students are able to connect mathematical ideas inside and outside class they begin to see mathematics as a cohesive body of knowledge.
The curriculum is aligned with the Tri-State New England (TSNE) Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) for Mathematics grades 5-8, the NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) Standards 2000 and New Standards "Performance Standards", which have been adapted by the State of Rhode Island as follows:
